This weekend, NASCAR comes to Darlington . Darlington Raceway, nicknamed “Lady in Black” and “The Track Too Tough to Tame: will host the Nationwide Series on Friday evening, and then welcome the Spring Cup on Saturday. Both races will be televised on FOX.The race track opened on Labor Day in 1950, and to this day holds 65,000 spectators. The track is made of asphalt and is a 1.366 mi track with four turns. The lap record at Darlington is 27.394 seconds, which was set my Matt Kenseth on May 7, 2009, during the NASCAR Spring Cup Series race. In the actual race, the record for fastest race was set by Dale Earnhardt in 1993. Earnhardt finished the race in 3 hours, 32 minutes and 29 seconds.
In this weekend Sprint Cup Southern 500 features Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Greg Bifle as the favorites. A few racers to watch include: Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton and Ryan Newman.
Harvick finished third at Richmond last week, but has never finished in the top ten at Darlington. Johnson has won twice at Darlington and also a second place finish last year. Busch is coming off his win at Richmond last week and his title at Darlington in 2008.
Kenseth is always a favorite, especially after his pole setting performance last year. Gordon, who is one of the top racers in NASCAR, loves Darlington. He has a record most seven titles at the course. Hamlin led for the most laps in 2007, but finished second to Gordon. Hamlin has three top 10’s at Darlington. Burton is a big time racer, but will need to control his mistakes – if he does – look out. Lastly, Newman, despite being winless at Darlington in 11 starts, he has placed sixth or better 11 starts. Last year, he led for 48 laps, and then finished fourth.
Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson are listed at BetUS at +600, which are the best odds for the race. Listed next, at +800 is Denny Hamlin. Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch and Mark Martin are listed at +1200, while Tony Stewart is +1500. Many of the other races are listed at +2000 odds or greater.
